Apple TV 160GB gets UK price cut to £219

Apple TV

We told you Apple TV had got a price drop in the US yesterday, well guess what? Today, we've got one too. The 160GB Apple TV will now set you back £219.

Just as they've done in the US, Apple's ditched the 40GB Apple TV. The 160GB Apple TV is now £44 less (down from £263).

We think there'll be a 250GB version of the Apple TV soon. But when it does arrive, expect to see a redesigned device. Apple TV is one of Apple's few remaining unredesigned products.

With the new iTunes Extras feature set to be integrated with Apple TV, could a new device be just around the corner? And what do you want a new Apple TV to do?

in the US the 160gb model is $229...  thats less than £145.  So how can they justify charging UK customer £75 more for the same product!  Sort it out Apple!

Even with VAT added (which they don't include in the US price) that is still less that £160 - I might have bought one at £160, but no way at £219. Shame as this is an underrated product.

The price difference US to UK on Apple products has been a common theme for many years and basically it is our own UK/European monopoly on tax such as VAT and import duty which are to blame. Ultimately all Apple products are globally compatible - I bought my iPod in New York and saved £100. An old bypass used to be to buy the product online stateside and have it marked GIFT on the packaging - even this has now been nailed shut by our greedy landlords. In terms of the downloadable content, Apple would love to give you this for the same price as in the US e.g. 50c for a song but again there is IP detection on your broadband account and it will revert you to the UK taxed download instead. This is not Apple's choice but rather an agreement forced on them by our authorities in order to gain access to the UK market. Along with the government and EEC (who hide behind the excuse of content protection for higher costs) Apple have also had to battle the monopolistic ITV, SKY and even the BBC in order to get any rented TV programmes through the UK Apple TV. This is because these organisations who have had free reign for years suspect that Apple will burst their bubble for our benefit - just like they did to Sony over the walkman and Microsoft's laughable attempts at a downloadable music service. Apple managed both of these supremely well and at a vastly reduced price yet still made a good profit.... so why can't any of the other providers do this? Frankly, I wonder why Cupertino even bother with us, it's such an uphill battle. This is a great product, a massive leap forward over Google's Gootube and Sky's restricted HD Box. In future it will do so much more... if we don't kill it off first.
