YouView internet set-top box launches in July
YouView, the Freeview box that lets you access on-demand programming through its EPG, has officially launched today at an event hosted by Lord Alan Sugar.
The Humax-buily YouView PVR will enable users to access the likes of BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5 for on-tap streaming content, in addition to the regular EPG complete with over 100 Freeview and radio channels, all without a subscription. Joining the service later in the month are Sky's on-demand service Now TV and Scottish station STV.
YouView will also offer the ability to shop online from the likes of Argos, Amazon and John Lewis for some easy couch-shopping action.
The Humax-manufactured YouView box packs a 500GB HDD and twin tuners, so that you can record one programme (or, on occasion, two) while watching another. It will available for £300 at retail – or through yet-to-be-announced subscription deals with BT Vision and TalkTalk – when it launches later in July.
With the Sony Internet Player with Google TV also out this month, the fight for living room domination looks set to be cranked up another level. Game on.
