Panasonic and NHK have taken the wraps off a monster 145in 8K plasma TV – the world's first self-illuminating Super Hi-Vision TV. That means a resolution of 7680x4320 – and at 145in it blows Sharp's 85-incher out of the water.

Panny and NHK have been able to create a plasma that size by developing a new vertical-scanning drive method for the display to ensure a stable image. Check out the full technical explanation here.

Unfortunately there's not much to watch on it just yet. The BBC will be screening some of the Olympics in 8K, though it's unlikely that the prototype will be making its way over to our shores anytime soon.
