Tesla’s Model S will reportedly see design tweaks – and a price bump

More of a luxury feel to set it apart from the Model 3?

The Tesla Model 3 is coming, with deliveries slated to begin at the end of next year, and the cheaper price means a lot more people will be able to buy the company’s electric car. But what about the existing Model S?

A report from CNET’s Roadshow blog suggests that Tesla Motors plans to further differentiate the pricier sedan from the coming Model 3 by making the Model S more of a luxury car. And that means not only adding newer and nicer components, but also increasing the price to match.

CNET’s sources within the company say that the differences will be small, but potentially numerous. For example, the nose of the car looks to see a redesign to put it closer in style to the Model X and Model 3, while the ventilated seats from the Model X are also expected to come into the Model S.

LED headlights are expected, as well, along with fresh exterior paint options and new interior storage areas, such as door pockets. The report claims that Tesla is currently working through the last of its production parts from the earlier generation of Model S cars, and that we could see an announcement about the revised version as soon as next week.

As for the price point, there’s no word on how much pricier the Model S will be following these tweaks; it currently starts at £58,500 for the 70D model, while the coming Model 3 is set to cost just US$35,000 (about £24,800) for the entry-level edition.

Making the Model S a bit more premium should help set the two apart, especially as pre-order numbers continue to climb for the Model 3. As of yesterday, more than 325,000 paid pre-orders were placed for the compact sedan, and the staggered rollout means that folks outside of the U.S. – and especially those who didn’t order on the first day – could be waiting a long, long time for the car.
