Sony takes aim at the Moto G with mid-range Xperia E5

Signature Sony styling, but the specs won't blow you away

Ever hold a Sony smartphone before? Then you’ll know exactly what to expect from the mid-range Xperia E5.

It’s the latest handset to borrow style tips from the top-end Xperia Z5, but without the wallet-busting price or super-fast internals.

Don’t write it off just yet, though. The Xperia E5 looks like a much more pricey phone, which is great if you’re all about the looks but you’re stuck on a budget.

It’s got what it takes to challenge the new Moto G, too, with a 13MP camera, quad-core CPU and a microSD card slot for bumping up the 16GB of built-in memory.

There are a few places where it falls short, though, most notably that 5in, 720p resolution screen. It’s also only got a lowly 1.5GB of RAM, and a 2700mAh battery. Still, Sony says that’s good for up to two days of use.

It’s running Android 6 Marshmallow, but there’s no word on whether Sony will be updating it with Android N once it officially arrives later in the year. We’re betting yes, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

You don’t get a lot of colour options, either: just basic black and white. Sony’s saving its more colourful hues for the Xperia X.

There’s no UK price just yet, and Sony hasn’t announced which countries will actually be getting it, but it should start showing up in shops by the end of June.
