Windows 8 – first look

15 Sep 2011

Windows 8 browser

Fiddle around a while, though, and there are significant changes – like a redesign for Windows Explorer (which now gets the full Office ribbon treatment), and an all-new Internet Explorer 10. From the desktop, that looks a lot like Internet Explorer 9, but access it from the Start menu and it’s a different beast. You may have abandoned IE long ago, but we wouldn’t put it past the browser’s new minimalist cut to tempt you back.

Looks interesting, but I am not convinced that MS can deliver on a single OS that will be all things to all people. The way they are trying to meld a touch/mobile OS with a traditional desktop OS looks a bit kludgy.

Kudos for trying, but as Ihnatko says "The bad news is that Microsoft has lacked the guts to cut the cord entirely. Every time the classic Windows 7 interface pops up, it looks like a drunken uncle at an otherwise elegant family wedding."

I currently prefer the separate iOS and Mac OSX strategy, but will be interesting to see what happens when it actually ships...

Microsoft again clarifies that Windows 8 tablets won't actually run Windows apps -

It's a big hmmmmmmmm from me, and probably the business world to or is the big MS going to do something different for commercial applications as not everyone wishes or indeed as yet has the speed to go to "THE CLOUD".

Where I can see the new layout being suitable for touch equipped devices - I consider myself to be somewhat of a Luddite when it comes to touch screen technology, I still like the tactile feel of a keyboard for typing. Personally this seems like a gamble from Micro$oft - just think it looks a little messy (I think the same way about Windows 7 mobile).
