Ready to dive in to HD now that the format war appears to be drawing to a close? Well, hold on to those shekels for a few weeks longer, because bargain Blu-ray players are just around the corner.
It's all thanks to a new, cut-price blue laser freshly released to manufacturers by Sony.
First to hit the shelves will be the SBR-1000 (pictured) from French firm Sigmatek, which promises 1080p, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby True HD for a staggeringly cheap €250 (£185).
We've not been told if that price includes VAT – which could bump the price up to nearer £220 – but either way it's sure to make Toshiba's bottom lip start to wobble.
The new laser should also unleash a slew of budget Blu-ray drives for PCs. Looks like HD DVD's price advantage could be under serious threat.
