Razer Edge gaming tablet with Intel and Nvidia insides is an absolute beast

Hear that? That's the sound of every tablet crying out, as a powerful presence is felt among the show floor of CES

Fans of Razer’s project Fiona prototype from CES last year will be more than a little excited to hear that it’s set to hit shelves this year, rechristened as the Razer Edge. And boy, is it powerful.

Beating within the heart of Razer Edge is an Intel i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD, while graphical grunt is picked up by an Nvidia GT 640M GPU pumping Windows 8 Pro to a 10.1in screen – all for US$1,000.

And if that isn’t enough to satisfy spec fiends, there’s also a Razer Edge Pro which starts from US$1300, whose spec bumps include an Intel i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, which can be upgraded to a 256GB variety if you throw a little more money Razer’s way. Whew.

An optional  US$250 Gamepad controller throws dual analog sticks, buttons, a D-pad and vibration into the mix and there’s also a US$200 keyboard dock with backlit keys to take advantage of Windows 8 Pro and it full-fat programmes.

There’s also an optional US$100 dock which serves up extra USB slots and HDMI out for big screen gaming. Games like Civilization can be played with fingers only, but keyboards, mice and the likes of Razer’s Sabertooth controller can be added for Steam titles.

Who cares if the 10in screen’s 1366×768 resolution isn’t up to Retina Display standards? So what if it’s twice as thick as an iPad? With that much power under the hood, you’ll be the proud owner of the world’s most powerful PC-in-tablet-clothing, and that counts for major geek points in our book.

Stay tuned for our hands on impressions of the Razer Edge and keep your ears pricked for UK pricing and release dates.

In the meantime, check out Nvidia’s Project Shield and the rest of the news from CES 2013.
