Thursday Tech Tickler – what do you think about the new anti-piracy moves?
Piracy eh? From rum-filled japes on the high seas, to nicking the latest Chas ‘n’ Dave downloads, piracy has long been synonymous with ne’er do-wells.
And an eye-patch and parrot isn’t going to help you disguise your IP address when your ISP comes a-calling.
Yes, the music industry and ISP agreement announced today could mean that illegal downloaders will be issued stern letters of warning. And if you choose not to respond, then you could be made to walk the virtual plank by your current provider. Eeep.
So what do you think about this latest anti-piracy move? Woefully Draconian? A jolly fine idea? Just plain stupid?
Let us know and you could win a lovely howies Spokes and Hopes T-shirt. Yaaar!

Music companies could use the data from Limewire etc to see whether it's worthwhile promoting an act in a certain country. Also sooner or later the record companies are going to offer peer to peer for a charge, they wouldn't have known how popular it would have been if it weren't for people using them illegally. At the end of the day companies should embrace P2P and thank that these people were actually breaking the law in the first place

listen very carefully to what charles dunstan said about it, the privacy laws etc. make it effectively impossible to prosecute someone and only the worst "offenders" get a warning letter

Its got to be said, record companies aren't exactly poor are they? There are still a whole load of people who go into shops buying cds, dvds and such like because they can't be bother to sit around and wait for their file to finish downloading.
Its not like everywhere you turn you see HMV, MVC and virgin stores closing down, people still appreciate the value of a true cd, what is wrong with downloading a few free songs once in a while??
personally i think there are better things companies can waste their time and money on, than trying to find "criminals"
