Sony X Series Walkman to hit shelves tomorrow

12 May 2009

Sony's highly-anticipated X Series Walkman will finally hit shelves tomorrow, the company has confirmed today. We've been looking forward to the X Series release since we first got our hands on it in Japan last year, and predicted we may well have a genuine iPod killer on our hands. Even better, when the guys at What Hi-Fi got an exclusive look at it a couple of weeks ago, the finished product didn't disappoint. The OLED touchscreen-packing PMP promises top class audio and video playback thanks to Sony's Clear Audio and S-master Digital Amplifier technologies, and is also the world's first media player to pack built-in digital noise cancelling tech. Another nice touch, and one sure to prove popular with consumers, is the built-in Wi-Fi and ability to stream content from BBC iPlayer and YouTube. We had previously been expecting to see the latest Walkman a few days earlier due to an Amazon listing suggesting availability from 10 May but it will in fact go on sale tomorrow, 13 May.There will be two sizes available – 16GB for £209 or 32GB for £279 – and from what we've seen, we reckon the X Series may well give iPod a run for its money. Let us know if you'll be jumping the iPod ship for the X Series below, and before you do be sure to check out our competition for a chance to win one for free.   Essentials Sony X Series Walkman Price: From £209 On sale: 13 May Contact: Sony

does it have web browsing, email, google maps, games, other apps that the iPod Touch does?

@ Ley_Ho_Mah Fair points - I guess it will come down to what people want out of their device. If they will primarily use it for listening to music then the Sony sounds like a good bet, whereas Apple are positioning the iPod Touch as a multi-function device that does so much more. As an iPhone user I use the web and play games on it far more than I use for listening to music or making calls! In fact when I do listen to audio it is usually podcasts, so I guess sound quality (although important) is not the overriding concern that it might be for you. Good for the iPod Touch to have some competition - here's hoping it causes Apple to improve the sound quality on the next gen Touch. Each to their own, and respect  :)
