Apple intros talking 4GB iPod Shuffle

11 Mar 2009

Well, our predictions were close, but Apple's new 4GB iPod Shuffle has exceeded expectations by adding a new design and, strangely, a VoiceOver function that lets it talk to you. We're not exactly sure why, but the new feature – not available on any other iPod – lets the Shuffle tell you in what we're hoping will be a comically robotic voice what song is playing, the artist and the names of your playlists.Although there doesn't seem to be any Nike+ functionality, the new design seems to be aimed even more at runners and outdoorsy types with controls now placed on the earbud cord and the long design – reminiscent of the first 'chewing gum' version – still highly pocketable. The original 2GB version is still available, though the 4GB capacity will give you room for a much healthier 1000 songs. Time to test it with some tricky album titles – 'Lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven' by 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor' should do for starters. Just seen the video for the shuffle on the apple site, and the controls are now on the headphones!  Surely this means you can't use your own headphones as you wont be able to control the player?!

Its probably just me, but it doesn't seem smaller than the 2nd/3rd generation shuffles, just elongated.  I presume you have to use the supplied headphones, which I very much doubt are as good as some other brands. The computer voice may be fairly cool, but surely Apple could get someone from each artist to read the song titles. Also, why get rid of the choice of multiple colours?!

Overall, I think this is quite a resonable product from apple. But,sadly when apple didnt show us any 'amazing' products at the keynote in January alot of apple lovers were diappointed. Its in a way a good 'comeback'.But, I expected more! This ipod shuffle can speak and tell you what song your listening to.Ok,thats good. But what else does this gadget have to offer? And, anyways I dont get the point of the 'voice over' feature. Won't you already know what song your listening too already? Because your the person who HAS DOWNLOADED it to ur shuffle.
