Recon MOD heads-up-display goggles go open source with Android
Recon, the creator of the MOD heads-up-display toting sports goggles, has just announced it will be releasing an SDK for Android app developers at Google I/O later today.
This is coupled with news that Recon will be releasing new hardware for other sports including a pair of heads-up-display toting glasses. That’s right Google Glass, there’s competition already. Although with this announcement being so closely linked to Google we suspect the big G is simply preparing an open source app market in preparation for its AR glasses.
The Recon MOD goggles allow developers to create apps that use its many sensors including – deep breath – an altimeter, barometer, 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyro, 3-axis magnetometer, temperature sensor, Bluetooth, and GPS. An app called Realski has already been developed to help skiers traverse ski resorts without the need for maps or, more importantly, stopping.
