TomTom iPhone sat nav app hits App Store

After being the first to announce its iPhone app at Apple's WDC in June, TomTom has finally wandered into the mobile sat nav market with the announcement that its iPhone app can be downloaded from today.

Navigon and CoPilot had already beaten TomTom to getting an app into the App Store, but now the TomTom app joins them packing its IQ Routes, safety camera info for 11 European countries and automatic re-routing when you miss a turn.

Optimised for the iPhone, you can use multi-touch gestures to zoom and pan, navigate to contacts in your address book, and change your view settings between 2D and 3D.

Of course, the benefit TomTom's app has over the others is its car kit, that will enhance GPS performance, charge your phone and packs a built-in speaker for louder voice instructions and hands-free calling.

The only problem is that although the app is available to download now, Stuff has been told the car kit isn't and won't be available until the "summer". Considering it's already mid August, we're chasing TomTom for a bit more clarification on this.

We're waiting to get our hands on it before we make any judgements, but we were rather shocked to see no mention of live traffic updates, which rival app CoPilot Live is set to get later this year.

Compatible with iPhone 3G and 3GS, you can pick the app up now for £59.99 for UK & Ireland maps, or £79.99 for maps of Western Europe. Compatibility with iPod touch has been promised as coming "soon".
