Tesco Mobile to offer the iPhone before Christmas

25 Nov 2009

iPhone 3G SWe all know that "every little helps" when it comes to forking out for an iPhone, and the news that supermarket giant Tesco will be offering Apple's handset before the year is out has got us dreaming up the cheaper tariffs and cut-price handsets we so hoped for from Orange.

Yes you heard right – Tesco Mobile has announced it will be carrying both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3G S on its network, and hopes to get both contract and PAYG offerings on shelves in time for Christmas.

If this is the case, a pre-Christmas launch would beat Vodafone's planned release date of the handset in January – another blow to the network which already lost out to Orange on timescales.

The good news is that Recombu has been told Tesco wants to be as competitive as possible, but that pricing is still being negotiated. Could this spark off the price war we've waited for?

Although no release date has been confirmed, we do know that you'll be able to pick up the iPhone in store and online, and there's currently a holding page on the Tesco Direct website for you to register your interest.

Now the bad news for many will be that Tesco Mobile is a joint venture with O2, so will see the network receiving the same 3G coverage as O2 handsets – something O2 has not proved itself to be that strong in in recent months.

What do you think – will Tesco come in at a lower price that O2 and Orange? Does Tesco Mobile sharing O2's 3G coverage bother you, or is it the price that matters? Let us know below.

When you buy your new iPhone and realise that actually there's not an app for that ... send you idea to MEDL Mobile www.medlmobile.com and if your idea is unique and good enough, they'll develop it for you and share 25% of the profits with you.

If it's a more reasonable price, people won't grumble so much at the poor coverage, you pay for what you get. I see the problem being that O2 charges for a premium service that it's 3G coverage just doesn't deliver on!!

Exactly stuffsurfer, Apple is a premium company selling premium products. They could have picked any company they want to provide coverage and they chose O2. Other factors are obviously involved in this decision but simply put, apple would not have teamed with O2 if their coverage was significantly worse!

i agree, i have come off orange because their coverage in north west london has been so poor and thats 2g and 3g. When i say bad i mean i had to get an O2 pay as you go so i could receive calls in my room!! why dont you show the 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5G coverage. I'm guessing Voda and O2 still reign supreme.
