Stuff EXCLUSIVE – £370 for PAYG iPhone 3G
We’ve just been tipped by an inside source about the pay–as–you–go pricing plans for the iPhone 3G.The 8GB model is set to cost a massive £370, with the 16GB model clocking in at £470. That means you could be paying up to £200 more than the final price of the original iPhone, which came in at £170. The new figures tally with the Italian fees, announced two weeks ago, starting at €499 and rising to €569.It is not yet clear whether this will include any minutes or text bundles. However, if you want to hack your new iPhone to run on any network, it certainly won’t come cheap. An O2 spokesman has just told us, "We have no update on pricing for PAYG iPhone at this time. We will let you know more about this when we can." While you’re waiting for official confirmation, be sure to check out our iPhone 3G Bible for the full skinny on what to expect come 11 July.Essentials iPhone 3G Price: From free On sale: 11 July Contact: Apple

It is pricey, but Apple and O2 were always going to need to offset the cheaper, subsidised prices. And, of course, stop hackers sticking their iPhone onto other networks. To put it in context, an N96 will cost £600 without a SIM. That's not to say the iPhone 3G isn't expensive. It's just that Apple has shifted to the standard model employed by the likes of Nokia and Son Ericsson. No surprises here. The official announcement is coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled. Best Joe

But who exactly has set these prices? Because if it is O2 then they are being stupid if they think anybody will buy it at £370 and £470 a pop. And if it is Apple doing the pricing, well they have got greedy and will never be the same company again.

Firstly, I think the pricing is so expensive to claw back money from people who will hack one, PS3-man-u. Who, if we're being honest, are the only people likely to buy a PAYG iPhone. It's annoying, but it looks like it's an O2 contract if you want it on the cheap. It's most likely that Apple will set the price. I think if they priced them any cheaper, then they also fear losing out in the lucrative iPod market. That makes them far more money than the iPhone. Sad to say, but it just comes down to business models. Cheers Joe

You can get a 8gb iPod Touch for less then £180 the 8gb iPhone costs £370 so your paying a extra £190 << Which is over double! for the phone functionality. Ridiculous!

I want a 3G iPhone badly but I could not justify spending £370 or even £470 on a phone plus the fee for getting it unlocked!!! Hell no! O2 you will lose out big time!

those prices are wrong as O2 "accidently" posted on their website the prices £299 for an 8GB and £359 for a 16GB with 6 months free unlimited browsing and wi-fi before paying £10 / month to continue the browsing and wi-fi spots i agree it is still toooooooooo much probs not gonna get it now
