Samsung unveils solar-powered Blue Earth phone

12 Feb 2009

We can prattle on all we like which Android phones we want to see at Mobile World Congress next week, but Samsung has other ideas – it’s announced the world’s first solar-powered touchscreen phone instead.

The Blue Earth has a solar panel on its back that boosts its charge, though by how much in relation to standard mains charging Samsung won’t say.

To ensure that it’s greener than Leonardo Di Caprio, the Blue Earth is also made from plastic that’s been recycled from plastic bottles.

As you can see, the interface is green-focused too, somewhat comically telling you how many trees you’ve saved by walking rather than driving, and there are special energy efficient modes for toning down the screen brightness, backlight and Bluetooth.

Other specs are unknown at the moment, but we’ll furnish you with more details when we meet it face-to-face at Mobile World Congress next week.

this is a good start, maybe other manufacturers will use this sort of green idea to produce more tech like this. Maybe like how a watch works?..the batteries last ages on them

A fantastic idea and one that should be a standard feature in all mobile data devices and phone in a year or so. Bring it on eco tech warriers. I am glad it int green (in colour) too. Looks nice in blue.  :)
