Play.com selling SIM free iPhone 3Gs
Great news for non-O2 customers who want to experience the ace-ness of Apple’s multi touch interface, integrated GPS, iPod-like music and video and, er, a substandard camera that can’t even capture video. The iPhone 3G is now available SIM free from Play.com!
"How so?" we hear you cry. Well, Play.com has stated that the iPhone is available "due to EU legislation ensuring the sale of SIM-free mobile phones", and that you'll get everything that you'd expect from an 02 model – barring all the proprietary goodies, like free WiFi from O2 hotspots.
Owners will also be encouraged to register with the Apple site as you would do normally, and are completely covered by Apple's warranty – so all legit then, guv.
The celebrated web-seller is offering both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the iPhone 3G, priced at £549.99 and £599.99 respectively.
Not cheap. So if you do want to go contract-free on the iPhone 3G, you’re going to have to dig deep for it - it’s a far cry from the “free” iPhone deals due to hit O2 and The Carphone Warehouse in a matter of days.

Err hmm 'Rip Off'
Although i love my iphone and had to duck n dive to get one without a contract... this is a joke.. Actually its not, because jokes are funny and this aint. My 2 week old unlocked iphone was £378 from cex and was mint condition + it only cost me a few quid as i was able to trade in loads of old stuff towards it. Shop around people!

yeah, but a year of top ups at £10 will make £120 which is only a bit less than getting one sim free. I see the point of doing what you said paul.e.

Or, do as I did... Buy a payg O2 phone and jailbreak it for 20 quid at iphone unlock uk. It was very straight forward and have had my phone since they became available, with no problems. Sounds like an advert, sorry, but it is REALLY easy...

Is this unlocked Iphone compatable with the 3 network?

Woah, 599 is pretty dam expensive. Suppose, if can be used on any network thats the reason but still. I want one to use a sim only contract i got from t-mobile (compared the deals here btw http://www.simonlycontracts.co.uk/ ) and use it in an iphone but now i think im just going to switch to o2.

Totally agree with roshanb. Thats a very expensive price tag. I guess due to the high demand they can afford to charge such high prices. I got a SIM Only Contract here http://www.simonlycontractdeals.co.uk/ and thought I'l get an iPhone without contract. Seems like it works out more expensive so I'l be cancelling my SIM Only and going straight for a contract with O2.

I think its about time Apple released the sim free version without being tied down to a network's tariffs. Now, you can simply just throw in a Cheap Sim Only Tariff without being tied down.

some people do not like to get bogged down with a pricey monthly contract that lasts for 24 month and with so many sites like http://www.simonly-contracts.net offering a large choice of sim only contracts with a large variety of time, minutes, texts and great bolt ons there is more and more reason to have a sim only contract

Seems like good news for eBay, you can pick a iPhone3G pu there pretty cheap, especially a second hand one and then get a any one of plans on this sim only site http://www.sim-only.co.uk and have an iPhone on a contract from £10 a month!

Got to be good news for consumers so that they aren't tied into extremely long monthly iPhone contracts where the number of extra minutes, text and Internet access aren't as good as what are offered on SIM only deals at http://www.simonlydeals.mobi/ becasue the SIM only contracts aren't subsidised by the cost of a handset.

I think a Sim Only deal is great if you already have a good phone. If you want the newest smartphones getting a Sim Only contract at for example http://www.typhone.nl/sim-only/ is not the best choice
