Nokia Ovi Store goes live

26 May 2009

Having been given the official nod back at MWC, Nokia's Ovi Store is now officially live and taking direct aim at Apple's domination of planet app.The new service is available for all S60 packing Nokias, so whether you're toting an old–school N95 or a slick N85, there's something for you. Punters can head over to store.ovi.com now and get their virtual shop on.Nokia says there'll be up to 20,000 "items" up for grabs at launch, smashing Apple's debut figure and making Google's Android Market and its 50 apps at launch look pretty pathetic by comparison. We're off to spend the last of this month's pay packet now so stay tuned for our first thoughts. In the meantime, let us know what you think in the comments section now.

It's OK, not as polished as the App Store but all the Ovi Store needs is time and the full support of established devs like EA etc, and with the superior functionality of Nokia devices, should rival Apple's service in a year or two. Layout could be better organised, including the ability to search categories from the interface itself and not a phone menu is essential. Also, differentiating Java and native S60 apps is a vital update as well.
