New iPhone 2.1 – the first evidence?

29 Jan 2009

With the iPhone 3G barely six months old, talk has already turned to a sharp new version, thanks to apparent evidence uncovered in the latest firmware for Apple's best–selling blower.MacRumors has found reference to iPhone 2.1, a major leap from the current 1.2 edition. It's worth remembering that Apple uses these leaps in number to distinguish between new models, with Mac fanboys pointing out the jump from iPod Touch 1.0 to iPod Touch 2.0 last year.So what are we looking at? Well, that juicy fact remains elusive. But previous suggestions say we'll be getting more storage, a better camera, a screen to rival that of the HTC Touch HD and maybe even that much–fabled copy and paste function.Either way, Apple is remaining understandably coy. For our money, we reckon we'll see an update in June or July, tying in with the anniversary of the release of both versions of the mighty mobile. What do you think? Is this a hoax or the real deal? And what do you want from the next iPhone? Tell us what you think in the comments section.

I want to see photomessaging! Bluetooth to work better, be able to share files, and use mp3's as ringtones maybe :) That would be great

its so not worth it guys, if they are really going to dominate all of the phone market, they are going to want to sell it at a much cheaper price than the iphone 3G.

Wouldn't it be more of a surprise if Apple weren't releasing a new phone this year? I'll be interested to see what they come up with.

There are 2 features lacking in the current iPhone: 1) Removable battery. If I go on a long trip with no opportunity to recharge my phone, I want to be able to take along a spare fully charged battery which I can swap in when the first one runs out. Also if a battery dies, it's not big deal, just buy another and put it in. 2) Memory card slot. A cheap and easy way to extend the memory of the phone is to slot in a memory card, 8 Gigabytes being available for less than $30. This also has the advantage that information of the phone can easily be backed up without the slowness of a radio (OK you prefer the old-fashioned "wireless") link. If a new model iPhone included both these, I would be very tempted as I do like the user interface but without exchangeable power or memory, no way. Note that my el-cheapo Samsung E250 does have both the above features together with many of the iPhone's features and it cost me 25 GBPounds. It also has a very good (not as good as the iPhone) user interface and is considerably smaller than the iPhone. I look forward to more news of a new iPhone.

If it could be available on Orange that'd be AWESOME! New screen to Rival the Touch HD sounds like a plan. I'm not that bothered about picture messaging, or having a camera on a phone (quality always sucks in comparison to a decent SLR :P). Something new, amazing and unexpected that only Apple could pull off?And maybe using the new battery tech. that they have developed for the new 17" Macbook Pro to have a really long lasting battery?

I'd like it to do what I can do with a phone of a tenth the price. E.G Bluetooth to work fully. MMS to work properly. SMS forwarding facility. Come on Apple..these are basics!! In my opinion people have been suckered into this phone because it does a lot of fancy astheticly pleasing things. People who were mugs enough to buy one love to rave about it to anyone who will listen because they want to justify it to themselves. Deep down you knw there are far better phones out there.

Hi Lee This isn't out of date. iPhone 2.0 was actually just the 1.2 update and has since been referred to online as 2.2.1. As mentioned I in the article, the first Touch is 1.0, the second 2.0. This is standard Apple procedure. For my money, I think they'll beef up storage but leave Flash support by the way side. Apple still believes it can own web video without Flash. Not great, but that's the most likely move. Best Joe

The main improvement i want is a decent camera! not for professional pictures, but decent enough to print out and not think they came from a phone, maybe 3-4MP? Other than that its ok for me, storage is fine, battery is ok... not brilliant but ok.. A complete rework of the iPhone would be to obviously make it a bit thinner scratch proof plastic at the back, and a purely cosmetic point of making the screen completely disappear when its off, instead of a grey-ish black. Add the new camera with an LED light in the apple logo maybe? Id also love Apple to think more about their existing applications, adding more tools and tweaks, such as within the camera app. -Recordable videos from improved camera. -Alarm clock to include tracks from your iPod! -Re-think of texts, keeping the chat bubble idea but being able to do more with a text Also...does anyone else get extremely annoyed with the iPhone automatically selects the fastest internet connection, which is wireless....but then wait ages for a page to load, just to find out that its a 'T-mobile' pay connection! grrr.. -Joshua

im not sure that bringing out a new iphone before the 2nd gen is at least 18 months old, would be a good idea! apple will want to sell as many of the 3rd gen iphone as possible, but they said that about the 2nd to, which they seemed to do. if they bring it out to early no one will be able to buy into the 3rd gen  because everyone is tied into 18 month contracts. 2nd gen owners will be annoyed and apple wont sell enough. best thing id say would be a major OS update with flash etc etc and get the 3rd gens specs bang on!!

    @ lee.hammond69 we're talking about a hardware update, not software. n00b!

PMSL @ people who think that this article is referring to firmware and so is out of date. Learn to read! I've had an iPhone 3G for around 6 months and I'm still in love with it, but unless apple address the issues we've all been crying out about (native MMS, cut and paste, better camera and video recording) I wont be getting it's predecessor. Apple changed the game when they invented the iPhone, but the competition has caught up fast!
