LG watch phone – £1,000 a pop

24 Feb 2009

LG's GD910 watch phone was a big draw at CES back in January, and again last week at MWC, where the Koreans showed off its video calling capabilities. And with an exclusive deal signed with Orange, it looks like only the most minted of futurologists will be able to stump up for one.The chaps at Mobile Today have official word that the deal between the Orange and LG has set the price of the novelty phone at a massive £1,000 without contract. If you want to pay monthly for the privilege, you'll need to find £500, plus £40 a month, possibly for two years.Which begs the question, why? Sure it looks cool and gives you the upper hand in the gadget oneup wars, but at what cost? Surely you'd be better off with a killer smartphone that did all this blower can, and more?Tell us what you think down below. And check out our first look at the LG watch phone from CES.Essentials LG watch phone Price: £1,000 On sale: TBA Contact: LG

Two things, firsstly the cheap watch does not in a million years look as good as the LG version. However that's irrelavant because sencondly, the Dick Tracy look ain't a great one to be going for.

I bought one of the cheapo mobile watches off eBay and it was a familiar tale for me, as I buy quite a lot of Chinese future-gadgets. By that, I mean that it was a mixture of remarkable features (Bluetooth, Email, Web, Music, Video, voice-dialling and even A2DP!!) and really horrible design, with no real acknowledgement of the small form factor in the OS and a tiny stylus (made worse by the size of my Western bourgeois hands). The build-quality on the actual watch part was fine, but the strap and attachment looked a little Christmas-cracker to me. The two worst aspects that led me to resell it were unavoidable, I'm afraid: the size of the unit made it look like the bloody Omnitrix off Ben 10 and the sheer awkwardness of using it without a bluetooth headset. The speaker would have to be really loud (it wasn't) to be heard clearly in public, which would mean that everybody on the bus would be able to hear your confidential 'Dick Tracy' conflabs through a harsh speaker. And if you revert to the headset, the what's the point having the device in the first place? Not to mention that there is something very inconvenient about a watch that has to be charged every day or so and must be fiddled about with just to tell the time. Remarkable, surprisingly capable miniature tech, but flawed and impractical. I can't see how LG can address these faults, to be honest. This device merely confirmed to my friends that I'm a bit of a prat when it comes to gadgets.
