iPhone OS 3.0 – iPhone now supports MMS and Spotlight

17 Mar 2009

After sitting through news of TouchPets, Leaf Trombone and, er  Diabetes testing, the big iPhone 3.0 OS news has finally hit – and yes, it is that the iPhone wil support MMS.In a bold move that sees Apple add functionality that most basic phones have had for years, you'll soon be able to fire your mates messages complete with images. Again, hardly ground-breaking news, but as far as the iPhone is concerned it's the addition we've all been waiting for. In addition to a spruced-up App Store, cut, copy and paste functionality and a landscape keypad, you'll  also be able to forward and delete multiple messages and make voice memos while the new Spotlight homepage (shown as an app on your homescreen) means that you can search iPod, Mail, Calendar and contacts to search for content on your iPhone in a fuss-free way. Nice. You'll have to wait until the Summer to see this added iPhone goodies – as expected, iPhone OS 3.0 will be free to all iPhone 3G owners, but again, Apple has decided to charge iPod Touch users – $9.95 in the States, so probably the best part of a tenner over here too. What do you think? Did Apple miss anything out? Are iPod Touch users being unjustly penalised? HAve your say below.

This is very good news. Along with o2 slashing costa of owning an iphone it is a great time to switch to Apple. All i ever wanted was an all in one type device but i had to swallow the 'NO MMS' or ability to forward texts but it was worth it for the excellent ipod. Now i get it all... I am one happy bunny..despite the fact that I lost my safari link from my home page and had to reload the software on last night but at least i could do it all myself plus my contacts were saved on itunes which i thought was good. I didnt actually back it up or anything... Come on Apple lets have it then.. 3.0 that is.

As an ipod touch user I do not see anything in this update that excites me enough to pay out £10 or so. Now, if a flash player had been included, that would have made all the difference.

Apple have to save something for the new hardware, and I think that's when we'll see a much better camera and quality video recording.

My iPod Touch has stopped working. It is only 15 months old and has been well looked after. As it is now outside the warranty, Apple want £150 to fix it! I could get a new one (16Gb) for around £200. Apple are taking the piss. And I've had to fork out for the software updates. And here is another one they're charging for... I'm totally put out by Apple and will be looking elsewhere for my mp3 player.

Just watched the 1 hour & 20 min preview video on the Apple web site which fully describes the new additions for iphone customers and SDP update as part of the 3.0 update due this summer. Over 100 additions to the phone for users is great but i noticed that although we are to get stereo bluetooth.. he only mentioned this in conjunction with bluetooth headphones and speakers...not audio system or car stereo's...But the ability to add photos to sms and cut n paste acroos sms, mail, notes and from web pages is very good. Sending contacts and forwarding texts is again good and with all this it brings the iphone up to the industry standard for mobile phones (at last). The 'Push' app sounds good too but will use up slighty more battery power which i was not thrilled about. Already charging every day now. Plus, landscape in emails and texts will be better too. Didn't hear anything about a flash player though.. at least the quick time works well but then it would.

Has anything innovative been included that other phones don't have? He says as he uses his landscape touch keyboard thatsits on a phone with mms, cut and paste, group send, youtube, etc etc... Its crap for music though so I guess it makes the iphone the best smart phone then.

ipod touch owners are being thoroughly fleeced again!  Frankly scandalous!  When 2.0 came out I was so angry about paying for that I berated apple until they broke, and then all the gave me was a free itunes song credit and not even a 'sorry!' AND NOW being asked to pay even more for something that should have been on there originally is a joke!  First the new shuffle and now this!  ROTTEN APPLE!

I've just upgraded to an iPhone but I do resent the way iPod Touch owners are treated with regards to firmware upgrades. I still have one of these and, considering you pay over the odds for the device in the first place, asking users to fork out for a software upgrade is really unfair. I have paid for 2 software upgrades for my iPod Touch, simply to make the most of the device. Glad I won't have to now, but still very much against the idea. Having only had my iPhone for a few days, I haven't experienced any frustration from the "missing" features due to be addressed by 3.0. Not a big MMS'er, but some of the things sound like good features (although present in most other handsets).

Since when should these features have been included on the touch originally? On the iPhone, yes, but the touch? Touch owners are lucky to even be considered, lol. Lucky to have Wi-Fi and any data services, imo. Apple could so easily have left Wi-Fi out of the touch originally.

Only Apple can get away with bringing out an update which allows it to do what a £50 pay as you go phone can do as well as its competitors and for you guys at stuff to milk it up. I'm not one of these Apple haters but it really confuses me the amount of press you guys give the IPhone and information on the Palm Pre, WinMO 6.5 etc is so limited, especially as the Pre looks perfect, great touch screen and keys for texting and emailing!!

Afraid youve missed the most important part of yesterday's announcements, that is the opening of the dock and bluetooth to third party add on's. The ability to use the iPhone's processing power and screen will enable so many new and exicting bits of kit in all manner of different applications from medical as demoed to gaming and etc etc It's no longer just a phone it's a computer in your pocket (aswell as a phone and a games machine and now your personal medical advisor etc). For all you people that consider it just a phone your missing the point the apps are its strength and this is where Apple as an OS builder win the day! As for flash that may come on the new phone in June when they increase the size of the available RAM from 128mb, flash is very memory intensive the Pre which will run it (although not at launch) has 256mb and even that is pushing it. Touch owners you dont get anything for nothing, if you pay £30 a month then software upgrades for free seems fair if you pay nothing per month what do you want blood? Go back to using a Walkman and try doing the stuff the touch can do? to me £10 is fair. Oh and now it looks like we'll be getting video, locate my phone from mobile me and tethering when the new hardware is announced, the dev's are finding more stuff in the beta's of 3.0 now available to them. More ramblings here www.mygadgetlife.co.uk
