iPhone 3G – how to snag one first

Don’t fancy paying £370 for a PAYG iPhone 3G? Then you need one of O2’s contracts to grab the phone on the cheap. And details are emerging today on how it’ll all work come the morning of 11 July.
According to Apple Insider, O2 stores will fling open their doors at 7am, letting iPhone hungry punters grab their new cell early before spending a day rubbing it in the face of their less fortunate gadget–loving colleagues.
And from 1 July, you’ll be able to head into any O2 store and get all your credit checks and contract details sorted. That means you can just roll up first thing on 11 July and walk straight out with an iPhone 3G. All you’ll need to do is slap it into iTunes and activate the thing. Contracts won’t become active until then.
There are dirty rumours flying around that Apple will only be selling PAYG iPhones in their stores. However, that seems highly unlikely to us.
With just two weeks to go, make sure you know everything you need to by casting your eye over our iPhone 3G Bible.

Interesting news about being able to do all the contract stuff beforehand. I've signed up for the 02 alert, but so far haven't heard anything. Does anyone know if there are any special offers/deals for existing 02 (but no iPhone) customers? I've been with them for years, and would hope I don't have to pay exactly the same as someone who's just walked in off the street. However, I won't be holding my breath.

Hi Lee
No word yet on whether O2 will be offering existing customers a deal. I would imagine they will let you upgrade like current iPhone customers, but there's no chance of any discount when it comes to buying the phone or the monthly tariff. Those will be set in stone.

so does this mean you could buy an iphone and not activate it and you only have to pay 100 pounds for the iphone and have to pay the contract?

iPhone 3G is coming soon for Pay & Go
Pay & Go customers can now enjoy all the great features of the iPhone without a monthly contract.
The new 3G 8GB iPhone for Pay & Go will be available for £299.99 and 16GB for £359.99. This also includes unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for the first 6 months after you activate your iPhone*.
At the end of the six months you can continue to receive unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for just £10 per month. We'll notify you at the end of the six month period by text and you can easily unsubscribe if you choose to do so.
You'll also be able to choose one of our standard Pay & Go tariffs to use with your iPhone. The more you top-up each month, the more free minutes or texts you'll receive.
* This offer is applicable to all new and upgrading customers who purchase an iPhone on Pay & Go until Dec 31st 2008. Unlimited data and Wi-Fi applies to use in the UK only, subject to excessive usage policy. Unlimited Wi-Fi is available at any of the 9,500 Wi-Fi hotspots from our partners The Cloud or BT Openzone.
The 02 iphone pay as you go section has been updated today and also included the usual Pay as you Tarrifs + a new one.
So its offical.

@bowerz : As far as I am aware, you will not be able to walk out of the store without having first signed the contract, unless you decide to pay £299.99 for the PAYG version of course.

Update on pre-registering credit check.
Ive just been to CPWH and they say they are not taking deatils pre relase, as they cannot guarantee the credit check will still be valid in 7 days.
Unless 02 shop is different, i'm not sure if the above info is true or not.
Cheers
