£75 iPhone set for summer release?

10 Feb 2009

iPhoneThere seems to be no let up in the predictions surrounding the launch of a sharp new iPhone this summer. And after chatter about three new models surfacing in June, now another analyst has weighed in with his tuppence worth, even throwing in a spec sheet for good measure.

Mark Abramsky of RBC reckons Apple is lining up two models. A pared down $99 version alongside a specced up 3G model. The latter would pack a better camera, video shooting and 32GB, making it significantly cooler than the current iPhone 3G.

The low spec model wouldn't be an iPhone nano, rather an EDGE version with no video, a cheap monthly tariff and a $99 price tag in the US. So roughly £75 here.

Obviously, this is pure conjecture, but with word of a cheaper model growing more widespread, it really does look as if Apple is planning on dabbling in the cheap end of the market.

why doesn't apple just sell top quality products to improve the tehnology market?..instead of just deploying 'new' products with the apple tag on them just for an extra bit of dosh?

Personally, I don't see Apple doing a smaller, cheaper version, purely because the new MacBooks showed them retreating to higher, expensive ground, where they know they can make money.

As for constantly churning out new products, the fact is every company does it every year. Otherwise I'd be in that rather large queue for the dole!

I'm no Apple fanboy, the iPhone is lacking in so many ways. But, to say Apple doesn't sell products that improve the market is a bit harsh. The iPod changed MP3 players, the iMac changed computers and ,yes, the iPhone gave every major company the push they need to start making touchscreens.

Here's hoping the new iPhone is a belter!

Erm... Aren't you forgetting Planet Apple has its very own exchange rate. When they price their eyecandy for the UK, it's always $99 = £99.

    At least!
