3.2MP camera planned for next–gen iPhone
With just over two months until WWDC 2009 and a potential iPhone announcement, the rumour mill has swung back into action, this time bigging up a new camera for the world–beating blower.
According to Digitimes, Omnivision has bagged the order for a bulk of 3.2MP sensors for the next–gen iPhone. That would still put Apple's phone well off the pace of the Nokia N97 and especially the 12MP–toting Sony Ericsson Idou.
Word is that they've also received orders for 5MP sensors for "another Apple product", with suggestions flooding in that this could be for anything from the next–gen iPod Touch or even for use as a webcam in a MacBook.
Our thoughts? A 3.2MP camera would certainly make sense and fit in with iPhone 3.0's commitment to MMS. But with a 5MP sensor also planned, don't bet against a beefed up, higher tier iPhone rather than a camera–packing Touch.
As ever, let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

a 3.2mp camera? what's the point? the only reason i dont have an iphone is that the camera is so so so so so so bad! If apple want to clean up then sort out the camera and video capability and there you have it, mobile world domination.

To be honest, you don't really need any more than a 2MP camera on a mobile phone anyway. I find the camera on the iPhone fine for uploading quick snaps to Facebook or my MobileMe gallery and they even look good printed out on glossy 4x6 photo paper! But if I want to take any more serious photos, I've got a separate camera for that! A 3.2MP camera will make sense on the next gen iPhone as there are rumours circulating that it will come with video capture. And the extra 3.2 megapixels will help smooth out the video compared to video capture on a 2 megapixel sensor.

Personally I think 3.2 will be fine. The camera on the iPhone is fine in good light conditions and I used it on holiday in Italy a couple of weeks back and the landscape shots looked pretty good.

a 3.2mp could easily be better than a 12mp if the chip was a built better and bigger but it prob will be a little sensor like the rest of them, a bigger sensor and bigger flash would improve things but wont happen as that would take sales away from digi camera's

in response to having a seperate camera, when do i ever have my digital camera when i really want to take a picture of something funny or spontaneous? never is the answer as i dont have a hand bag to carry a phone, camera, mp3 player, that is the beauty of phones nowadays. A decent camera with even a decent led flash would do.

I am a big fan of apple, but have put off getting an iphone for two reasons. 1) O2's expensive tarrif and lack of reception around me, and 2) the crap camera! I've got a Nokia N95 8GB and when it comes to my upgrade its looking like the N97 will be its replacement unless Apple pull it out of the *** with the camer and move from O2!!!! The N97 looks like it could well be the iphone killer. So hurry on the review Stuff!!!!! We need to know!!!! (well I do!)

Funnily enough, we're filming a video review of the N97 this afternoon, so stay tuned. As for a review, we have to wait for a final production model, which will be a while yet.

with the the awsome scree the iphone has on it 3.2 would look brillant the 2.0 looks good with the screen but would be nice if the 5.2 was put into the iphone
