MWC 2010 – Sonim XP2 Spirit with Gorilla Glass is released

Here at Stuff, we like to think of ourselves as an elite team of action men and women. In our minds, we're not commuting to work on the train, – we're blazing down the world's longest zip line, we're not signing in – we're abseiling into the office through the window. We even find ourselves dodging the forces of evil on a daily basis (that guy who tries to thrust a copy of City AM into our hand every morning).
So of course an elite action team such as ours needs communication devices that won't die on us at the first sign of a stumble 'n' fumble.
Sonim has been the go-to guy for tough phones for a while now, and it's just released the XP2 Spirit. Endowed with a 2in screen protected by 1.5mm of brilliantly named 'Gorilla Glass' – presumably to prevent scenarios like this one it promises to be one of the toughest yet.
Previous offerings like the XP3 Enduro have been similarly chunky on the outside, but slim on features inside, but the XP2 Spirit is the first Sonim phone with 3G. On first inspection its new octagonal styling and outside protection look to be less Fisher Price and more G.I. Joe - which can only be a good thing.
Like some golf balls it has a magnesium core, so it's just begging to be driven down the back nine by a sexually frustrated Tiger Woods in some sort of brutal test. According to Sonim it will officially withstand 2m drops, an hour in 1m of water, temperatures up to 55C and down to -20C, and you can even push each button 850,000 times (though your thumb may give out before the button does).
Like its predecessors, the XP2 Spirit generously comes with an unconditional 3 year guarantee, so you can be as clumsy with, or mean to, your phone as you like. It's out next month, but no word on price yet.
