LG Optimus 2X: the world’s first dual-core smartphone

It’s been doing the rounds on the internet as the LG Star, but the world’s first ever dual-core processor packing smartphone has officially been outed by LG. As expected the newly named Optimus 2X runs off a 1Ghz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor but, disappointingly, arrives out of the box with Android 2.2 and not Android 2.3 Gingerbread as originally rumoured.

However, the dual-core processor is just one of many stellar features. By our reckoning it’s also the first handset to shoot and playback full 1080p HD video. Naturally, this means the predicted HDMI port is present and correct for hooking up to you HD TV and viewing your dailies in 100% full blown HD.

Also on board is an 8MP snapper, front facing 1.3MP camera for video calling, a healthy 8GB dollop of storage and a spacious 4in WVGA display, although we’re miffed LG couldn’t stretch to an AMOLED panel.

It’s pencilled in to launch first in LG’s homeland, Korea, in January 2011 and although there are no firm dates, UK will, fingers crossed, see it sooner rather than later in the year. We're expecting to get a closer look at the Optimus 2X at CES, so keep your eye out for more news at Stuff.tv
