iPhone 5 knocks Samsung Galaxy S3 off Stuff's number one smartphone spot

iPhone 5 review Apple iOS 6 best smartphone Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 vs HTC One X

The Stuff.tv iPhone 5 review is in – and, after some gruelling and gruesome gadget fights, so is our verdict on how it compares to the best Android has to offer. Apple has taken one of the most desirable pieces of kit on the planet and made it lighter and more powerful with a bigger (but no less glorious) display and a new build that's sleeker than anything else out there.

And as you can read in depth in the full iPhone 5 review, it's still pocketable (unlike many of its behemoth rivals), boasts the same mighty App Store and has an improved battery life over its predecessors like the iPhone 4S. Then there's iOS 6 which, despite not being given a complete makeover, is wonderfully intuitive with bags of new features and uses for that 4in Retina Display.

So even though we think there are plenty of people out there who should buy the brilliant Samsung Galaxy S3 or the beautiful HTC One X, it's Apple's iPhone 5 that we'd recommend. If you want a 4in plus screen, NFC or certain multi-tasking skills, the S3 or the One X will be a better bet.

Put simply, this has been a narrow victory for the iPhone 5. 2012 has been a stellar year for the humble mobile telephone and the Stuff team has taken to wading through incredible handsets on a daily basis. With the iPhone 5 back on top, we can't wait to see how Cupertino's arch nemeses respond.

Seriously? The only reason you seem to give here is that its more pocket-able than a S3. I would have thought less ram, a slower processor, potentially dodgy build quality (death grips, ubiquitous cases or smashes screens), lack of an SD card, lack of a USB 2.0, no NFC chip, up to twice the price for the handset, more expensive apps, restrictive software and having to use a fat bloated itunes would perhaps outweigh that. I've an Iphone 4s, my wife has an S3, and I constantly looking at her lovely screen and snappy browsing with envy. I was so hoping that the Iphone 5 would be better and I can't see form your review how it would be. I guess I do have reasonable sized pockets though.

Well said stjohn_rowland. It says a lot when they put it in at No.1 despite the disappointing reviews everywhere else and totally fail to justify why it is No.1 given it is beaten by the likes of the S3 in virtually every respect. It's become way to fruity based for my liking here. Check out T3 where the iPhone 5 only makes 4th and only gets a 4 star review which is far more in keeping with the majority of the reviews out there.

T3? They're just as bad but Stuff's true colours are coming to fruition once the fruit company releases it's new toy. If you want a more objective review, go to Pocket-lint.com, i'm not by any means dismissing the IPhone 5, but at the same time I'm not praising it to warrant a number 1 spot out of blind love and bias. The folks at pocket-lint give a detailed hands on review whereas here, what the hell, 4 very short paragraphs with no detailed explanation as to why I should part ways with a GS3 or One X, never mind the unreleased Galaxy Note 2 but that may as well be relegated to number 5 according to Stuff Magazine. I used to come here for objective non biased reviews, I see that i misjudged and should have steered well clear of this cheerleading Apple fanboy site. I'm an IMac and new Ipad owner so I'm not blindly loyal to one OS.

I actually lol'd when I read this. How a phone with less features can be rated number 1, is, lets be honest, daft. (To put it politely).
I switched from the iPhone 4 to an S3 and am very glad I didn't waste my time waiting for the 5. Yes it has LTE, but there is an LTE version of the S3 too.
Articles like this are more increasingly leading to me think about canceling my magazine subscription.
