It snapped up a much-coveted ‘innovation’ gong at the CES show in January, and now Philips’ flagship one box home cinema has arrived in stores to a standing ovation.
The HTS9800W is an all-in-one solution with some highly sought after features. It serves up 6.1surround sound, with its three rear speakers cleverly operating wirelessly via a receiver box.
Another bonus is its video upscaling, which takes your existing DVDs and boosts them to faux 720p and 1080i quality via an HDMI connection. Format support is, as you’d expect from a Philips system, comprehensive; it’ll play DVD+/-R/RW, CD-R/RW, MP4 discs and CDs loaded with MP3s, WMAs or JPEGs.
Perhaps its best feature, though, is the design. Aside from the handy addition of wireless speakers, the sleek main DVD unit also has touch-screen control, backlit keys and the usual helping of black Philips chic, while the main unit and flat-panel speakers can be wall-mounted or left freestanding.
