Volkswagen lets its self-driving car take the wheel

Volkswagen has recently revealed its temporary autopilot technology, which can allow a car to drive semi-automatically at speeds up to 80mph. The nifty tech makes use of adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, meaning that the car can automatically maintain a safe distance from the driver in front at a safe speed, as well as staying within lane markers.
If you fancy having a nap or playing on your 3DS behind the wheel, however, think again – we’ve been warned that constant monitoring is required. Although Google’s wheels are far more advanced in that no babysitting is needed, VW’s technology is far closer to being production-ready, as it utilises existing technology. A road-ready version in the next few years? Yes, please.

Driver-less cars are the future of automotive industry. VW Parts are getting digital as it puts is electronics to a new level.

Interesting technology. While the technology for auto driving cars may be present, the greater hurdle would be acceptance from the public. Ignoring the possible safety issues behind this technology, most people drive cars because they like the freedom and sense of control it offers.

I don't know about that, I what if something is wrong with the system? I can't trust it with my life. I wish it was that good but I don't think we're there yet, we need better roads and better drivers for this to work. On the other hand I think my issue is related to whether I should trust the technology or not. If Volkswagen would ever consider donating a car like this to me I wouldn't refuse it, that's for sure.

I love that car bu personally I think that it will be risky for drivers to do what you have mentioned i.e., playing 3DS :)

Driving should be taken seriously, I mean who wants to play a game while driving. You can't undo anything if it happened. the energy egg

Programmers should have accident control built in on this car. Sometimes we rely too much in technology like auto driving. home energy monitor

I've seen such a car at the used car sales NH office and I was curious how autonomous it is when self driving. Although the system is advanced, it still needs the driver's attention and corrections. In my opinion, unless it get's better autonomy, the system is useless.

WOW. VW really outdid themselves this time. A car that drives by itself? now that's pretty amazing if you ask me. Also surprisingly, VW performance margin has also been sky-rocketing recently. Good for them!
