25 best space movies ever

21 Oct 2010

Barbarella (1968)
Not just Jane Fonda prancing around doing a naked zero-G workout (although a whole generation only watched it for that bit – you know who you are). Psychedelic and sexual, as you might expect from a film inspired by a French comic.

Good list, personal favourites inclue Dune, Moon and silent running. If I had to be picky and chuck one out, it'd be avatar.

Yeah, Galaxy Quest and Sunshine should really be in the main list... but at least they get honourable mentions! But what about Armageddon and Mission to Mars? They're both excellent films about space!

Why the hell wasn't Danny Boyle's Sunshine in the top 25? it is a great space film, better than some of the rubbish on the list.

Shurely Close Encounters deserves a place?

To be honest I'm sure we can double the list but even so, its a pretty good effort, not many you can argue shouldn't be in a top 50 at least

Have to admit that The Chronicles of Riddick is one of my guilty pleasures - also no mention of The Planet of the Apes (original), Blade Runner, Tron....the list goes on. Great to see Silent Running and Dark Star mentioned though

I wonder that why Avatar was added in the Space movies. It sounds bit odd to me.

The fact that Sunshine isn't even on this list makes it a complete waste. Also, where's 2010? Where's Cargo????

Some of these are total cliche choices, too. The Last Starfighter? That movie might have a nostalgia aspect to it, but it's actually a pretty crappy movie.

Still, no Sunshine is just unforgivable. As is Cargo, but I'm guessing the "brains" at Stuff don't dabble in foreign movies much.

    Cargo is a fucking masterpiece.

I'm glad sunshine is'nt on there, it was bloody awful. To me its just Event Horizon 2....brain mush for the masses. The most dissapointing thing is that both of those movies could have been classics had they followed a more believable format and not tried to turn it into hellraiser in space. Fucking boring. We need more films like Moon, films that can make you think and still have action based scenes in them (whilst making them believable, not just pinhead in space crap).

One movie I would like to give a shout to is very old, so I'm hoping to turn a few people onto it because its actually (still) very good. Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Despite the god awful title that puts you off watching it, it is actually a very well made serious sci-fi that follows all the correct conventions such as bothering to get the science stuff right, or at least making the effort to try as opposed to having to cheat and fantasise their way around problems. If you havent seen it, and if you can track it down, and if you like serious sci-fi's that can scare you, excite you, and make your brain work and not having to resort to stupid horror concepts in order to create suspense but achieving the same result in a more creative and realistic way, then I wholeheartedly recommend you dig this one out. And the effects are surprisingly still very good for such an old film.

No space (ahem) for "Solaris", but you got "Avatar" in there. A retarded cartoon for idiots. Ooh, look at the pretty pictures!

I don't want to live in the same world as you people.

Nicely presented information in this post, I prefer to read this kind of stuff. The quality of content is fine and the conclusion is good. Thanks for the post.
