25 best space games ever

Elite (1984)
BBC Micro, Acorn Electron
As far as interstellar trading goes, Elite is still our top pick. We spent weeks of our lives playing planet-to-planet salesman Commander Jameson, buying and selling minerals, drugs and other commodities around the virtual galaxy.
Although the graphics seem basic now, Elite is still worth picking up as an emulator today if only to see its influence reverberating through gaming history. The Archimedes version was a particular highlight.

Now, if this was a poll, at least the fan-boys wouldn't react quite like this.
...and Elite (innovative) had a much great impact than Elite 2 (buggy)
...and WC:The Darkening was MUCH better than WC:Privateer
...and while strictly speaking not a "space game", I myself am surprised that Missile Command isn't there for its trackball excellence.
...and you've included so many side scrollers, and not included the best two best ones (my opinion)... Defender & Scramble.
But I'm not going to rant.
Oooh, how about a 25 best side scrollers?
Defender
Scramble
Green Beret
Aliens
Willow
Sky Kid
etc.
Hmmm maybe 25 won't be enough.

Those guys are right about Frontier. If you loved that, or the original Elite then you'll be interested that their creator (David Braben) is kickstarting development of the next sequel, Elite Dangerous. Have a look here:

The original Frontier: Elite II on the Amiga wasn't buggy. I played it for months without a hitch. It's sequel was a bit buggy however.
