Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss (1992)
The venerable Ultima franchise got a 3D spit-and-polish for this innovative instalment, which saw the series' hero the Avatar banished to the depths of the Stygian Abyss to – you guessed it – rescue a princess.
The game's big innovation was its use of a first-person 3D perspective, complete with varying heights, the ability to look up and variable lighting – all long before Doom hit the scene. But the tech was only half the story, with eight gigantic levels of claustrophobic underground labyrinths to explore.

Great List ... Bought many of the games listed. Looking forward to Diablo III in 2012

Generally a good list, I'd argue that Baldurs Gate is a far lesser game than Baldurs Gate 2 and similarly Diablo is nothing on Diablo 2, so in both cases I think the sequels should have made the list instead.
Planescape Torment also should have featured as it's largely considered to have the best storyline in videogame history.
And personally I think Oblivion was a step down from Morrowind, but I'm well aware that many people disagree so I can understand its inclusion.
Otherwise though good job, you managed to feature games both old and new and from numerous formats.

Oh what a blast from the past - Ultima Underworld was soooo ahead of its time, apart from the great 3d graphics it had a brilliant rune based spell system which I think has yet to be equalled.
I actually bought a PC just so I could play it (DX2 66mhz with a whopping 80mb HD and 16mb of ram, lol). The follow-up was v good as well
Dungeon Master blew me away when I first saw it - I spent many an hour in the managers office playing this game when I should have been on the shop floor :)
oh and Zork (all the infocom games really) was by far the best text adventure ever written followed closely by the Scott Adam adventures :)
Argh showing my age now

No Times of Lore? No Silver? Only one Zelda game? Also, Dungeon Master was groundbreaking, but Eye of the Beholder and EotB 2 were far better.
