Nintendo admits that virtual reality is an "interesting technology"

Oh Ninty, you big tease

Super Mario 64, re-imagined in virtual reality, with you as Mario.

You just threw money at the screen reading that, didn't you? Well one day, it might just happen.

Nintendo, or more specifically, its president Tatsimi Kimishima, described VR as being an "interesting technology" in a recent earnings call, and the company has confirmed that it is researching the technology - albeit with no concrete plans to launch any products in the near future.

So yes, that Mario 64 VR experience we're lusting after is just another crazy pipe dream for now, but at least it's not a total impossibility. Older gamers will of course remember the brief life of the Nintendo Virtual Boy back in 1995, and they might even remember the nausea-generating headaches caused by its monochrome display (and not to mention, high price.)

With the likes of the Oculus RiftHTC Vive, and PlayStation VR all set to make a very big splash this year however, there's never been a more apt time for Nintendo to dip its toes into the VR water - especially with torrent of 360-degree VR cameras currently being announced too.

The company is of course also working on its next-gen NX console, which is rumoured to support 4K video streaming along with a separate Wii U-like controller. Just make sure that's perfect first Nintendo, and we'll be more than happy.
