Netflix House of Cards
Netflix has bagged three Emmy awards – including best directing – for its original series House of Cards.
David Fincher's opening episode picked up the best directing award; the series also won creative arts Emmys for outstanding casting and outstanding cinematography, both awarded at a ceremony a day earlier.
Although Netflix-produced shows only won in three of the 14 categories they were nominated for, the best direction award win marks a milestone for streaming video services – and vindicates Netflix's decision to pour money into its own original series.
The new TV
Netflix has already committed to producing five original shows a year, and shows no sign of slowing down – upcoming new series include Turbo F.A.S.T., Netflix's first children's show, and Sens8, a sci-fi series from Matrix directors the Wachowskis.
Between Netflix's Emmy win and the buzz created around streaming episodes of Breaking Bad, it looks increasingly like online streaming has come of age. Check out our interview with Netflix content head Ted Sarandos for more on the streaming service's plans for the future.
