Minox’s decision to launch a non-camera product has only been slightly diluted by the company simultaneously launching a MP4 camcorder. The products have been referred to by company insiders as the DM-1 and the DMP-1, on account of that being their model names.
The DMP-1 is a solid-state photo viewer, MP3 player and FM radio in a 73x53x15.5mm shell. It must be reiterated that the product has no camera functionality, despite coming from Minox, a camera manufacturer. This shocking outré gadget will come with 512MB on board, and an SD card slot for expansion. Battery life, if they’re claims are to be believed (and with this kind of craziness going on, anything’s possible) is up to 12 hours.
The DM-1, despite clearly being a diversionary launch to counteract that of the non-camera-packing DMP-1, looks quite cool. It’s a solid-state MP4 camcorder along the lines of the Samsung Miniket and Sanyo Xacti. A 3.2MP CMOS sensor captures 2816x2112 pixel JPEGs, or 640x480, 15fps movies, or 320x240, 30fps movies. A swivelly-lens gives the product sufficient gravitas to overshadow the non-camera DMP-1 looniness.
Prices for these two gadgets are yet to be announced – heck, the whole thing might be one big joke. Well, good on you Minox.
