Video face-off – iPod Nano 5G vs the rivals

17 Sep 2009

When Apple added a video camera to the iPod Nano, it picked a fight with a host of very capable pocket cams. As the Don King of gadgetry, we couldn't help but organise for a tussle to take place – so we grabbed the Nano 5G, Flip Mino, Kodak Zi8 and iPhone 3GS and took them out to shoot test vids of our swans and a Pacman head.

The videos below are far from epic, but should give you a taste of each cam's exposure, noise levels and colour reproduction. You can see more iPod Nano 5G vids in our unboxing – let us know your thoughts below.

Why not use the Flip HD?

It's also worth mentioning that you have to mute your iphone 3GS while recording otherwise you get an awful humming noise in the background. This is because the speaker and mic are very close together.

We thought a comparison with the original Flip Mino would be more interesting than the Mino HD because it shoots at the same resolution as the Nano (640x480) – but the Kodak Zi8 is there if you want to see how it fares next to an HD pocket camcorder.

So why include the Kodak and exclude the Flip HD? Lets be honest, you're looking for products it might compare favourably against when in reality noone would but the non HD flip anymore.
