Unboxed: Google Nexus One

26 Jan 2010

When Google announced the Nexus One earlier this month, it became just the latest phone to be lavished with the iPhone killer label.

Now all the way from the States, the Nexus One has finally landed in the Stuff offices. The big question was, would it live up to the hype, or would it fall to the wayside like many before it?

First up, it feels great in your hand. It's lightweight, but not so light it feels cheap, and it's certainly got the edge over the iPhone when it comes to skinniness at just 11.5mm thick (vs. the iPhone's 12.3mm).

The 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen is bright, responsive and snappy, thanks to the 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood, and the 5 megapixel camera takes clear pictures with its built-in flash and autofocus.

The four touchscreen buttons at the bottom of the screen allow you to go back, bring up a shortcuts bar, go to the homescreen, or search, and require a bit more of a firm touch than the on-screen icons.

There's a trackball for those who don't want to be touchscreening all the time, and the phone comes with a number of pre-installed apps including the recently-announced Amazon MP3 for Android, Facebook and as you'd expect, all the Google services.

In the box you'll also find a pair of Android-branded in-ear headphones, but if you're not a fan fear not – there's a 3.5mm jack for you to plug in your own.

And finally you'll also get a lovely Android-branded protective case as well so you can keep your new gadget safe from scuffs and scratches.

So what do you think to Google's Nexus One? Fancy one for yourself when it hits Vodafone in the spring? Let us know below, check out our 5 things you need to know about the Nexus One, and keep it locked to Stuff.tv for a full review shortly.

I ordered mine a day after the Google announcement so that I could check on the specs etc. I must say I'm not disappointed. As and ex HTC Hero and iPhone 3G user - the Nexus One is a great phone.

I like the fact that it is quicker and has a larger screen than the Hero. Updates to Android now in 2.1 mean that HTC Sense becomes less important. It is more customisable than the 3G and widgets add a lot to the home screens - I became bored of my phone displaying rows and rows of icons. I guess this is the old Android vs iPhone multi-tasking argument. It now handles music better with the use of Doubletwist as media manager too.

Android market is slowly catching up and there is certainly enough on there for functional apps and passing the odd bored moment - check out the emulators!

Can anyone tell me if there is a push mail option out there for the Nexus?  Our server downloads e-mail directly, so I have to use Emoze to push my e-mail from my desktop to my Touch Pro2.
