Next Big Thing – 3D cameraphones

12 May 2010

Not more 3D...
Don't be all Nelly Negative – the third dimension is the future. The whole TV industry couldn't be more excited about 3D if it combined with Smell-O-Vision. We've also got 3D gaming heading to the Xbox and PS3, while the Fujifilm W1 made digital 3D photography possible. And now Sharp has developed a 3D camera module for mobile phones.

Great, two lenses to clean
I'm just going to ignore that and focus on what great news this is. In addition to the 3D capture – still and video, I might add – this module is capable of 720p hi-def. Even better, 3D video can be recorded in 720p – the Fujifilm W1 only manages VGA quality for vids.

And the future is when?
The modules will start rolling out in July, which means they should find their way into a handset or two by the end of the year. Sharp is also working on small 3D displays, so you'll be able to view the results on your mobile screen. Your next phone may well be a 3Dphone.

i dont know about other people but it feels like 3D is being pushed down our throats. its all well and good but am i going to have to have 3D specs with me all the time to view pics and movies???

Also a few films I have seen recently would lose nothing if they were 3D or not, clash of the titans was awful and alice in wonderland was good 3D or not.

I'm all for improvements etc but buying all new hardware is the aim for the manufacturers i'm sure.

I see what your saying hooman, most people are not even up to date in terms of HD never mind 3D.  This does seem genuinely cool though, especially if you don't need glasses to view it (like the Fujifilm W1, which I have had a play with and is great fun)

I've always wondered why this hasn't been done before.

Some really good apps could be developed using a 3D camera. You could loose the timer and have a hand gesture to set of your camera instead. Apps could measure distances as well.

I just cant get excited about 3D. Yes Avatar was excellent but everything else has been rubbish. If its the future how come my 8 year old daughter and all her friends hate the prospect of a 3D film and now request to see the 2D ones.

I see the potential and thats the key word for gaming but I cant see a future when the family sits around with the glasses on
