IBM serves up Wimbledon apps for iPhone and Android

18 Jun 2009

With Wimbledon just days away, its official partner IBM has served up a volley of virtual Wimbledon apps to make your tennis experience a smash.

Terrible puns aside, IBM's trio of Wimbledon apps will ensure that you get the absolute most from Wimbles, whether you're at centre court or the centre of town.

First up is a simple Twitter aggregator that will allow you to keep up to date with real-time Wimbledon Tweets. It'll include Tweets from players, celebs, the official Wimbledon blogger as well as IBM's dedicated Wimbledon scouts stationed throughout the tournament. It'll be live from 22 June, and available to download here.

Next up is an iPhone app that will feed you the latest news, scores and video highlights when you're on the go.

And lastly this very tasty Seer Android Beta that will feature location-aware elements, allowing you to use your Android blower as a real-time guide and interactive map of the tournament. Using GPS, you'll get a ‘heads up display’ augmented with live data from the scoring systems and IBM scouts reporting from around the grounds.

If you pointing the camera lens towards a court, for instance, you'll get the court number, and also details about the current and subsequent matches.

In Map View, your location is pinpointed on a detailed map of the grounds, while you can receive an aggragation of news feeds and updates from IBM scouts, and see in real-time what is happening around the site.  And a radar function will help you pinpoint places of interest in your vicinity.

It's a perfect example of augmented reality in action and we can't wait to try it out in situ next week. Now, where's our nearest strawberries and cream stall?
