Apple iBooks – Jobs unveils Apple's new ebook store

27 Jan 2010

Apple iBooks

With the iPad working in part as an ebook reader, Apple has announced its own ebook store called, you guessed it, iBooks.

Basically an iTunes for books, when launched it shows the books you've downloaded in a rather lovely bookshelf display.

You can then launch the store from the bottom of the app, which looks very similar to the App Store or iTunes.

There are five big partners on board including Penguin and Macmillan, and books will be offered in the popular ePub format.

Pricing spotted in the presentation was between $7.99 and $14.99, so pretty standard pricing – of course we'll have to wait and see what that translates to in UK pricing.

What do you think to the iPad? Will you be buying? Check out the specs and let us know below.

Jobs said theres a gap between laptops and smartphones im not so sure that there is if im out and about its the smartphone (htc hero) and if im at home its a pc or laptop i cant see where i would use this? too big to put in your pocket, and too small for home use compared to a real computer or tv. i honestly cant see where this would be used or why you would fork out hundreds for it! That being said im sure that apple fan boys will ensure this sells in its millions lol.

Great idea if you add in mac os then you have somthing magical otherwise it's just an iPhone on steroids.  Not worth it really my iPhone does the same. Shame really they dropped the ball on this a bit.

A 1.5lb steering wheel? The weight was a key element for me.

Lots of people seem to be saying there is no need for a product between a proper laptop and a smartphone - and yet netbooks have been selling well despite being mainly used for email and web surfing - which is just what the iPad will be good for. Also, the iPad is quality whereas most netbooks frankly aren't. Surely the iPad is a threat to netbooks and e-Readers, and isn't that enough to be going on with?

I well might get one instead of a kindle.then it makes sense. imagine you are on holiday then you can read a book listen to music and video and then surf the web/email. v useful but price is sticking point for me.

Well Apple iPad 2 has been launch now. But Apple iPad 2 is still a bit beefy at 1.3 lbs as compared to Kindle 3 which weighs 0.55 lb. But I would still recommend the iPad 2 over the Kindle looking at the brilliant LED backlit IPS screen. The quality is much better than the e-ink screens when it comes to reading outdoors. But be wary of the battery life, iPad lasts for just ten hours where as the Kindle DX will survive up to four days without any recharge.
