Next Big Thing – transforming cars

21 Apr 2011

Volkswagen has made a sandwich toaster on wheels?
Well, not quite. What you’re looking at is a concept car by designer Colin Pan, who reckons he’s cracked the secret to urban transport flexibility. This modular car can disassemble into two gyro-balanced personal vehicles – a small car for commutes or a Segway-like vehicle for local trips.

So it’s a car with a Segway shoved inside it. What’s the point?
Essentially, yes, but it’s all about choice. Fancy a drive into town? Take out the car. If there’s a bit of traffic or you just want to pop down to your local, then use the two-wheeled option. Put an end to those car-sharing family feuds at last.

This’ll be perfect for the hot and sunny climate of the UK. Oh wait…
Granted it’s not the perfect solution to all of your transportation woes, but it’s nice having the option to mix things up a bit. Next time you're stuck in traffic you can park the car and continue in the detached single speeder unopposed. Invincible, in a way.

just to point out that segways r actually illegal to ride on in the uk due to some stupid law from the early 1900's or late 1800's so this would be pointless in the uk if infact some 1 is crazy enough to build this machine

It's actually the highway act of 1835

There's not much left of the act according to: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Will4/5-6/50/contents

'There are currently no known outstanding effects for the Highway Act 1835.'

So what's the difference between a Segeway and the use of a mobility vehicle?
And if the Segwat had all the lights, plates etc of an electric scooter would it be road legal?

It is section 72 of the 1835 Highways Act as amended by the 1888 Act that amongst other things is the legislation used to ban the segway, the only place you can legally use one in the UK is on private land with the owners permission, the regulations which govern the use of a mobility scooter legally described as an "Invalid carriage" are specifically for "Invalid carriages" an "invalid carriage" is for the use of a disabled person only, the segway would amongst other things have to be type tested, taxed and insured for road use

This is indeed the next big thing. The design is rocking; the concept is no doubt innovative. This concept looks like has come out of a sci-fi movie. Automotive designs keep evolving; and some brilliant designs are coming up now. I personally prefer rvs like class b rv; these are extremely comfortable regarding long distance family travel.

It's like having a transformers car in your garage! It looks like that most of the Auto Parts in the future will run economically with no petrol on its engine. Soon it will be powered entirely on electricity or any type of fuel that does not have any carbon content.
