Smartphone owners are getting into digital audiobooks in a big way – and Audible is responding by recruiting big names to whisper sweet nothings into your ear.

Amazon-owned Audible has snapped up celebs including Samuel L. Jackson, Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway to voice titles in response to surging demand for digital audiobooks, according to the Financial Times.

Audible wants to reposition the audiobook industry as "a performance art... more akin to movies or HBO." We're thinking Johnny Depp is a shoo-in for the works of Hunter S Thompson, and we will march on Audible's offices if they don't snap up Sean Connery to read Ian Fleming's Bond novels. Morgan Freeman, meanwhile, is the obvious choice to read the Bible.

Any other famous narrators you'd like to see paired up with classic novels? Let us know in the comments, or on Twitter.
