[intro]LG pulls the world's first dual-format HD player out of the hat: it's £800, and here in spring. [/intro]
Well, that's the format war over with then. LG this morning announced the first ever player to spin both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs, at a stroke taking the steam out of the tedious high-definition disc showdown.
The BH100 will cost around $1199 when it hits US stores in the first quarter of this year. In one of those tense party trick moments that are so common at CES, a Korean tech genius was given the job of demonstrating the BH100's abilities, using first Batman Begins for HD-DVD, then Superman for Blu-Ray. The upshot? It worked, bar a rather nervous minute while we waited for the Blu-Ray disc to load.
The player is full 1920x1080p, can play your old DVDs, and just may kick-start the average person's interest in high-def discs. Here's hoping. The good news is that it is coming to the UK: sources reckon the BH100 will appear on UK store shelves in April, with a price tag of around £800.
LG is also launching a PC drive at the same time. Also priced at $1199, it will also record HD.
