LG Optimus Sol to bask in European sun first

September sun-chasing beckons

As much as we love them, gadgets aren't perfect. Most suffer from at least one of three deadly sins: rubbish battery life, fingerprint smudges and an aversion to direct sunlight. LG is really going after the sun problem with the LG Optimus Sol (E730) handset to allow sun worshipping gadget-addicts to have their cake and eat it.

The Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) smartphone has been popping up in video leaks for a while but LG has now confirmed that we can get our hands on the "affordable" smartphone in mid September here in Europe. The 9.8mm Optimus Sol is powered by a 1GHz processor and sports a 3.8in Ultra AMOLED screen so you can see your apps and emails even when the sun's glaring straight at your phone.

To tackle another of those niggling problems, LG has also created a Dark UI function to use less white light and boost battery life by up to 30 per cent. Of course, we'll need a trip to a remote island paradise to fully test out LG's claims – see you in the spring.
