LG G3 leak points to a pixel-packed 2K display

Yep. That's 2560 x 1440 pixels. Your eyes won't know what's hit 'em

A whole host of phones were rumoured to arrive this year with 2k displays -the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Sony Xperia Z2, the HTC One (M8) – but so far, 1080p screens have stuck around. The LG G3 however, could soon change that.

Reliable Twitter tech leaker @evleaks has shared part of a user agent profile for a mysterious LG device which goes by the model number LG D850, and it has a 2560 x 1440 screen nestled in its specs.

The D850 model number doesn’t match up with any known LG devices to date. The LG G2 and G Pro 2 have the model numbers D802 and D830 respectively, so it’s very likely that D805 points to a newer, unreleased device, most likely the LG G3, which has had a rumoured 2k screen on the cards for a while now.

So far so good, but there is a slight problem. A previously leaked shot of a photograph reportedly taken with the LG G3 points to an LG D972 model number.

That’s different enough to rule out slight numerical variations for international models, so either LG is releasing two new devices, or someone’s crossed their wires.

We’re throwing more weight towards @evleaks’ information, given his solid reputation and stack of correct predictions.

If it does prove to be true then the LG G3 will be the first major manufacturer to smash through the 1080p barrier, and it will be interesting to see how the South Korean tech giant will approach the niggling battery life problem.

Pushing that many pixels will be much harsher on the battery, but given the excellent battery life of the G2, we’re hoping that LG has improved its stacked battery design even further to create a super-sharp phone that’ll still last till bed time.
