It’s emergence day for Gears of War Ultimate edition on PC

Microsoft's got a nice surprise for PC gamers that like chainsaw guns

Surprise! Gears of War Ultimate Edition just roadie ran its way from the Xbox One to the PC.

Microsoft made the release official today, just in time for news to land from last week’s behind-closed-doors spring showcase event in San Francisco.

Just like the Xbox One version, Gears of War Ultimate Edition on PC is a remastered version of the original game, complete with all the extra multiplayer maps that first appeared as DLC. The single player mode gets the extra chapters cut from the Xbox 360 original, too.

Everything’s been turned up a notch in terms of graphics, with overhauled cut scenes, a 60fps frame rate, new lighting effects and 4K textures, if you’ve got a super hi-res monitor.

Naturally keyboard and mouse are supported, in case you don’t want to play with an Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller.

A leaked listing on the Windows 10 store suggested that the Ultimate Edition was coming sooner rather than later, but it was still a bit of a surprise for Microsoft to drop the announement and put the game up for sale on the same day.

Gears fans will be able to buy it right now from the Windows 10 store, but they’ll need a fairly beefy PC to run it at the highest detail settings and 60GB of hard disk space to make room for it.

Gears isn’t the only Xbox game making the jump to the PC, either; Microsoft confirmed that Forza Apex was in the works, and that Killer Instinct would be getting a Windows release at the end of march.

You can grab Gears from the Windows store now for £22.99.
