Huawei’s Ascend P8 superphone is set to launch in April

Report claims the Chinese giant’s next flagship smartphone will be unveiled in London

Don’t expect to see Huawei unveiling its new top of the range smartphone at MWC 2015.

The Chinese company will instead launch the Ascend P8 at a special event in London a few weeks later: Wednesday 15th April to be precise.

Ascend P in the UK

This news comes courtesy of Pocket-lint, who spoke to Huawei’s director of marketing communications Jerry Huang recently. Huang didn’t spill the beans on the Ascend P8’s specifications or features, but it’s likely to improve on those of its (fairly formidable) predecessor the Ascend P7, which boasted a quad-core 1.9GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, a 1080p 5in screen, 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera.

Huawei’s choice of London as a venue is telling. Despite huge success and visibility in the Far East, the company remains something of an enigma to Western consumers. By unveiling its next flagship phone in the UK, Huawei is making the statement that it has global ambitions when it comes to smartphone sales.

While we won’t see the Ascend P8 at MWC, Huawei is believed to be launching its 2015 range of tablets and wearables at the Barcelona show. You can read about them, and everything else we’re expecting to see unveiled there, in our Mobile World Congress 2015 round-up.
