But from next year, that'll all be a things of the past. Because Ofcom has just given the thumbs–up to plans to bring HD to Freeview, with the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 all making their offerings available.

That's the good news. The bad is that it won't be available until the rear end of 2009 and because it uses the DVB–T2 standard, punters wanting it will have to fork out for a new set top box. And don't expect those to be cheap, at least to start with.

Still, at least it means we can watch endless My Family repeats in excellent detail. And who needs top notch sports and films when you've got that to look forward to.
