Even thinner MacBook Airs coming in 2016?

You might have guessed the range was on its way out, but one report says otherwise

With the arrival of Apple’s 12in MacBook earlier this year, more than a few commentators predicted that the MacBook Air would soon be put out to pasture. After all, the MacBook offers better performance in a neater, thinner package, and its high initial price was sure to drop in coming years.

But according to one report, there’s a new bunch of MacBook Airs on the horizon.

Taiwan’s Economic Daily News claims that these will be brand new, slimmer models in 13in and 15in screen sizes (where does that leave the 11in Air, we wonder?). The report says the skinnier design comes courtesy of totally redesigned innards.

There’s no word on whether or not it’ll have a Retina display. The report claims the new models will be on sale in the third quarter of 2016, which would mean an unveiling in July, August or September. If that’s the case, Apple may decide to launch the new range at its Worldwide Developers Conference, which takes place in June.

If the claims hold up – and we’re not sure that we entirely trust Economic Daily News’ sources here – Apple will be selling three different ranges of laptops come next autumn: the MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro. All of which will be in the 12in to 15in bracket. Is that too many?

The Air could, of course, become Apple’s default “budget” laptop. Leave out a Retina display and keep the price low(ish), and you’ve got a decent-sized, decent-performing notebook with tiny form factor. And that’s all a lot of people want, after all.

We’ll keep you posted on further developments in this story.
