The robot you see before you isn’t, we’re afraid to say, the return of Short Circuit. But while your disappointment may be crushing, we urge you to pick yourself up and make some time for WALL-E, the star of Disney and Pixar’s new animated blockbuster.
The film, due out this summer, is set in the year 2700 and follows the fortune of a robot called WALL-E (or Waste Allocation Load Lifter – Earth-Class) who has been left on earth to clean up the planet after it’s been ruined by rampant, unchecked consumerism (that’s your fault, Stuff readers).
Fittingly for a film that warns of the dangers of wasteful mass-production, Disney has teamed up with Pixar animation and Thinkway Toys to mass-produce this replica, called Ultimate WALL-E. It can move around autonomously thanks its 10 motors, and has sensors that let him respond to sound, obstacles and touch.
Little more is known about the mini Johnny 5, but it seems unlikely that he’ll be able to clean your room like a Roomba or carry out the trash. Oh well, there’s only one thing for it – another episode of robot racing
